LHM leadership presentations focus on mission, vision, growth initiatives
Peoria, Ill., Jul. 18, 2003 A continued focus on mission and growth were primary themes in keynote executive speeches yesterday evening and today at the 2003 Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) Outreach Expo and Convention here. International Lutheran Laymen's League (Int’l LLL) President Alvin Waldron and Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) Executive Director Rodger Hebermehl each addressed more than 1,500 league members and guests in separate presentations at the Peoria Civic Center. The Int'l LLL is the parent organization of Lutheran Hour Ministries.
Waldron presented his 'vision of the league' address in evening opening sessions yesterday. Hebermehl discussed ministry operational goals and challenges this morning. The primary focus of both presentations – the ministry's unwavering commitment to effectively deliver God's message through media amid continuing fiscal challenges.
"This past year has not been an easy one for the League or for the nation as whole," stated Waldron. The continuing downturn in the economy has affected our ministry. However, we must not loose sight of what we've been chosen to do. As the sowers of God's seeds and the laborers for His harvest, He is calling us to carry forth His message. Much has changed in the last year, but our vision, goals and mission to share the Good News of Jesus Christ remain constant."
In his ministry status and progress report, Hebermehl reinforced Waldron's message with optimism. "There is no way to sugarcoat the current financial figures," said Hebermehl. "Lutheran Hour Ministries is experiencing significant financial challenges. However, I want to assure you I am optimistic our donors' situations will improve as our economy continues to recover, and I am optimistic because today’s challenges are an opportunity to better position this organization in service to the Lord."
Hebermehl cited several steps taken by ministry leadership to counter the financial shortfall of the new fiscal year. These include eliminating 25 St. Louis staff positions, closing 18 ministry centers worldwide and laying off approximately 60 international staff. In addition, LHM suspended production of new "Woman to Woman" radio programs "On Main Street" television shows.
"No one knows when this current economic downturn will end," stated Hebermehl. "For now, we continue to work smarter and more efficiently in sowing and reaping the seeds of God's harvest. There is a bright future for Lutheran Hour Ministries and we remain committed to strategic growth."
LHM leadership last year affirmed five strategic growth initiatives – promoting evangelism and follow up training, using effective media to proclaim the Gospel, building a strong LHM identity, reaching and involving ethnically diverse audiences, and attracting and engaging youth and young adults in active ministry.
