Lutheran Hour Ministries Teams with Illinois Social Service Agencies
Community service projects planned for July 17-20 Peoria convention

St. Louis, Mo., Jul. 9, 2003 — Painting. Landscaping. Assisting the elderly and disabled. Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) has teamed with three Illinois social service agencies to serve the Peoria community July 18 and 19.

More than 250 volunteer teens and adults are expected to take part in 11 community service projects as part of the LHM 2003 Outreach Expo and Convention to be held through July 20 at the Peoria Civic Center.

"We've worked for months planning interesting projects that can truly make a difference in the lives of others," says LHM event coordinator and Volunteer Opportunities Manager Polly Gregali. "We consider washing windows, cutting grass, painting rooms or entertaining the elderly hands-on lessons in Christian love and caring."

LHM volunteers will work en masse with Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI), the Children’s Home Association of Illinois, and Lutheran Hillside Village staff on Saturday morning, July 19.

In addition, a special "Make a Difference Day" has been planned for the afternoon of July 18 for teens and young adults attending the convention. Working in partnership with LSSI, five volunteer groups are expected to assist senior citizens with yard maintenance and light chores in a neighborhood near the LSSI office on Rohmann Road in West Peoria.

Major July 19 projects include painting and decorating LSSI therapy rooms; cleaning the grounds and play areas at the Children's Home Association of Illinois Knoxville Campus; installing park benches on the Lutheran Hillside Village grounds and participating in a special 'puppet ministry' performance for elderly residents there.

The LHM 2003 Outreach Expo and Convention officially opens July 17 at the Peoria Civic Center with business sessions and a kick-off presentation by President of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Dr. Gerald B. Kieschnick. International Lutheran Laymen's League (Int'l LLL) President Alvin Waldron also will deliver his 'vision of the League' address. The Int'l LLL is the parent organization of Lutheran Hour Ministries.

Friday, July 18, has been reserved as a day of learning and Christian family entertainment. It will feature six Christian experts in afternoon outreach, training and empowerment workshops. Topics to be covered include the scientific and archeological basis of Christianity, sharing Christ with Muslims, and Jews and Judaism within the biblical narrative. At 7:30 p.m., Lutheran Hour Ministries will present comedian Ken Davis, the rock band, Echelon, and Michael Lewis, "The Jesus Painter," performing together for the first time. Tickets to "Lutheran Hour Ministries Presents Ken Davis and Friends" are now on sale through TicketMaster, or at the Peoria Civic Box Office, 309-676-8700.

On Saturday, July 19, two of the nation's most-requested Christian family and parenting experts – psychologist Dr. Kevin Leman and nutritionist David L. Meinz – will top the list of quality presenters at the LHM's first-ever "Celebrate the Healthy Christian Family Conference" to be held at 9:30 a.m. in the Peoria Civic Center. Leman will give two of his most popular seminars, "Making Children Mind without Losing Yours" and "Adolescence Isn’t Terminal." Meinz will present his newest seminar, "Today's Healthy Woman," which focuses on women’s nutrition and health issues.

At 4:30 p.m., July 19, "God's Grace in Peoria – A Celebration Event!" presented by Lutheran Hour Ministries will climax three full days of festivities, celebration and learning. More than 2,000 members of local Lutheran congregations, clergy, LHM supporters and guests are expected to join in 90 minutes of praise to God. The "Parade of Nations" – 90 colorful flags from the nations served by Lutheran Hour Ministries – will lead up to the inspirational preaching Speaker for Lutheran Hour Ministries the Rev. Kenneth Klaus.
