New Officers Elected to Int'l LLL Board of Governors

Greensboro, NC, Jul. 19, 2009 — At its 92nd International Convention in Greensboro, North Carolina, the International Lutheran Laymen's League (Int'l LLL) elected Lou Marting to the post of vice president, Ed Tiefenbach to the position of treasurer, and Paul Walther to the position of secretary. Eight other people were elected to fill regional governing positions. The eight regional governors are:

• W. Michael MacDowell
• John Raffel
• Charles Groth
• Lorris Haarberg
• Michael Brown
• Dale Bentley
• Bob Felstead

Following is biographical information about each elected officer:
Lou Marting of Mission Viejo, California, was elected to a two-year term as vice president. He has been a regional governor and chaired the International Ministries and United States Ministries committees of the Board of Governors. Marting is a former LLL district president and an Ambassador. Previously he served on district and zone boards. Marting has degrees in business administration and biology and is retired from Dow Chemical. He attends Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Lake Forest, where he has been chair of the elders and of local outreach. He is retired from the U.S. Army Reserve and currently is an active Gideon.

Ed Tiefenbach of Regina, Saskatchewan in Canada, was elected to the position of treasurer for the Int'l LLL. He was a regional governor, chaired the International Ministries committee, and was a member-at-large. He has experience in the LLL as a district president, membership chairman, and development chairman. He is vice president of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Regina and has chaired a college board of regents. A retired senior vice president and chief financial officer in the steel industry, Tiefenbach is a certified management accountant. He belongs to Financial Executives International as a lifetime member. Besides volunteering, he had worked for Marathon Oil, a credit union, and a power company.

Paul Walther of Belleville, Illinois, was elected to the position of secretary for the Int'l LLL. He has earned a doctorate in education and has professional experience in Lutheran schools, two universities, and a community school. A former insurance broker, he was active in the Area on Aging. A lifelong member of the LLL, he is an Ambassador, zone board member, and district president. He has experience as an international member-at-large and is a former zone president. Walther has held church-related positions such as elder, chairman of evangelism, chairman of personnel, and chairman of Lutherans for Life. He has been honored with various community service awards.

David Muck of North Tonawanda, New York, was elected as the governor of Region 1. Holding an associate degree in science, he was a tool and die designer for Wurlitzer. Muck served as LLL treasurer, governor, and chairman of the Volunteer Opportunities committee. He was on the Ministry Support committee and the Executive committee. Muck has been active with a young adult task force and as district president, vice president, and facilitator. He was a zone president and vice president. He has held congregational positions of president and chairman of elders, stewardship, and missions and currently belongs to St. Paul Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda.

W. Michael MacDowell of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, was elected as governor of Region 3. He belongs to Faith Lutheran Church in Hopkinsville and has been elder and president. He received degrees in secondary education and administration. A retired teacher and migrant advocate, MacDowell has held leadership positions in various civic organizations. In the LLL, he has been an Ambassador, zone officer, and district president. He has been very active in officer positions with his district's Lutheran Church Extension Fund (volunteer of the year). He has also been involved in volunteer leadership at Mid South district conventions.

John Raffel of Greenville, Michigan, was elected as governor of Region 5. He had been a member-at-large, was on the Resolutions committee, and is a former district president, zone vice president and secretary, and local fair booth coordinator. Raffel is a local group president. A member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Big Rapids, Raffel has held congregational positions including congregational chairman and head of their $800,000 building project. He works as a sports editor for a newspaper and belongs to several professional organizations. He has been a leader in planning district conventions and young adult events, and he has also been a district facilitator.

Charles Groth of Fairmont, Minnesota, was re-elected as governor of Region 7. He majored in history and physical education in college at Mankato. He is a retired regional manager for Peoples Natural Gas, supplying the needs of customers in three states. He had been mayor of Fairmont as recently as 2006, and had served the community on several committees, including chairman of economic development. A member of St. Paul Lutheran in Fairmont, he has chaired the elders and deacons, and had chaired a previous congregation. In the LLL, he was a district president and vice president, and has held zone positions.

Lorris Haarberg of Arapahoe, Nebraska, was re-elected as governor of Region 9. He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and majored in Agriculture Economics. He owns and manages a supermarket in Arapahoe. He has been very active in civic positions (including the Lions Club, on committees, and president of the Chamber of Commerce). As a member of Trinity Lutheran in Arapahoe, Haarberg has served on various committees dealing with worship, education, evangelism, and elders, and was congregational chairman. In the LLL he has been a district president, vice president, and secretary.

Michael Brown of Westminster, Colorado, was elected as governor of Region 11. He has served the League on the international level as a member of the Resolutions committee. He is a district president and had been vice president and Ministry Support chairman. Brown is a former zone secretary and current Ambassador. He belongs to Beautiful Savior Lutheran in Broomfield and has served as elder and chairman of the Board of Education. His college studies at National American University in Denver centered on business administration. He spent 32 years working for General Electric in Denver as an operations manager.

Dale Bentley of Meridian, Idaho, was elected as governor of Region 13. As a district president, he serves on the Resolutions committee. He is also a zone president and treasurer. He was district vice president and a local president. Bentley belongs to Christ Lutheran in Meridian and has been a congregational president plus head elder, was involved with evangelism, and headed the Sunday school. He has been on the board for Camp Perkins. He earned his college degree at Boise State University, and he attended Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska for DCE training. Now semi-retired, he has been owner of Rendezvous Point Development.

Bob Felstead of Canmore, Alberta in Canada, was re-elected as governor of Region 15. Retired, he had been in automotive-related work. Active in the LLL for years, he served on the international level as a member-at-large and on committees for Resolutions and Elections. Felstead has served multiple terms as president in two districts and served as treasurer and secretary for LLL-Canada. He had been local LLL group president. His church is Shepherd of the Valley in Canmore and he has been active in the congregation as chairman, elder, and treasurer.
